  The Lomo Lubitel 166+ is a remarkably versatile camera. With the right film, some patience, and a cable release, you can pretty much shoot in any conditions, and not even be limited to one possible option to get the right exposure. Because of the multitude of possible settings, you can shoot long exposures at f-stop 16 or even 22 for great depth of field, or even shorten your exposure a bit at a smaller f-stop and take portraits in any light. The Lubitel+ doesn’t mind, because it puts complete control in your hands in every way.

  There is something so exciting about shooting 35mm film through a medium format camera when the sprocket holes on the film are exposed. The Diana+ can do it courtesy of the 35mm back. And with some tape and foam and rubber-bands you can Macgyver something effective on some other cameras. But I’ve never used a camera that shoots 35mm film through the sprocket holes with the quality and control of the Lomo Lubitel 166+.

  I found my first lubitel on ebay. She came from Ukraine and had the lovely name 166. Shipping cost more than the camera herself. She arrived and I saw she’d been used before. Some parts were a bit broken or missing. I shot a few rolls, always thinking about the shoot from the hip rule and have not been looking through the viewfinder.

My Holga tends to be the party animal – taken whenever there’s a get together or a club outing. Diana likes to go with me to museums and galleries.   When I adopted Lomography as a hobby, my husband has encouraged me to experiment by giving me unique photography related gifts for all of the various holidays we celebrate like Christmas, Birthday Month, Cats Birthdays, National Waffle Day, etc. For Christmas 2007, when the presents were placed under the tree, I noticed a small box that wasn’t colorfully wrapped in reindeer or snowman paper. It was humbly covered in plain brown paper with many Russian stamps and an address label decorating the top of the box. The package was sent from Kolomna, Russia and was addressed to me. I thought, “Wow! What could this be?”

  I wanted one for the sake of novelty. I admit it. It seemed so cool to have a TLR Camera. My friend had one but he wouldn’t lend it to me because it wasn’t working properly. So when I got my LC-A I decided to add the Lubitel 2 to save on the shipping costs (Oh the lies we tell ourselves).

  No it’s not a Rolleiflex and it’s not a Hasselblad I’m holding in my hands. But people sometimes think so when they see me standing there with my Lubitel pointed at a great motive ready to take the picture. “It’s a LUBITEL”, I tell them and they just look at me sceptically.

  swieconek from the community visited a fleamarket some time ago in Bruges, Belgium and came across some real vintage goodies: A store booklet containing original Dutch ads for Russian cameras in their youth (1968)!
