For more than 20 years, I had been looking for a mechanical camera (WITHOUT batteries!). Having heard about the Fed 5 from “The Photographers’ Gallery”, in London, I went to England to buy it. I like the FED 5 so much because it’s a very strong camera: you can take photos on the beach, the mountain, in very cold places or in very hot ones. You just have to make sure there’s film in it. I like to listen to “her” mechanical song when she’s shooting. And, of course, there’s the 80´s design – no plastic, just metal with metal. So what are the Fed 5’s best features? The range of speeds; you can do everything with all the speeds, but I like the “B”. The metering system is great. Whether the aperture is small or large, the Fed 5 achieves amazing depth of focus. You can even approximate the distance by looking at its scale (don’t think, just shoot!!)
